DESIGNING YOUR DREAM KITCHEN: Make the most of your space with the perfect layout

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Whether you’re entertaining guests, baking with the kids or enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, you want your kitchen to be as welcoming as it is practical.

Designing your dream kitchen is exciting, but with so many decisions to make, it can also feel daunting. Luckily, at Woollards of Mildenhall, we know a thing or two about creating dream kitchens!

One of the most important aspects of kitchen design to consider is the layout. This is the foundation of your overall design and will determine the flow and functionality of your space. Whether your space is large or small, a well-thought out layout will help to enhance your kitchen dynamic and optimise your space. Here’s our guide to different kitchen layouts and some top tips to help you choose the right design for you.

Taking STOCK

Before embarking on any design decisions, it’s important to assess your existing space, consider your lifestyle and think about what you need from your kitchen. Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What works well for you with your current kitchen setup and what doesn’t? Do you need more storage space for ingredients, or does a lack of worktop space frustrate you? Making a list of your likes and dislikes about your current space will help your kitchen designer to understand your priorities.
  • What are your cooking habits and which appliances do you use the most? If you’re an avid home cook, you will want a kitchen layout with ample prep space and well-planned storage.
  • Besides cooking, what other daily activities do you like to do in the kitchen? Today’s kitchens are often multi-functional spaces, so think about your day-to-day movements. Perhaps your kids do their homework whilst you’re prepping dinner, or you use the kitchen as a space to work from home.
  • Do you like to entertain? If you enjoy entertaining guests, you might want to consider a layout that incorporates features such as a sociable kitchen island, or even space for a wine fridge.

LOOKING AT LAYOUT

Once you’ve considered all of your requirements, it’s time to think about choosing a layout that will work with the size and shape of your kitchen.

If you have a small space, don’t worry. The right kitchen layout will make the most of the available space to help things flow smoothly. Perhaps you are working with a space that isn’t a standard shape, with sloping ceilings or tricky features such as pillars.  At Woollards of Mildenhall, our design team has vast experience of working with all sorts of unique spaces, so we can help you figure out the best layout for you.

Here are some classic kitchen layouts for you to consider:

Single-wall kitchens: a popular option for open plan living, single-wall kitchens create a compact cooking area along one wall, freeing up floor space.

Galley kitchens: with cabinets that run along two parallel walls, these kitchens are well-suited to smaller properties, maximising a limited square footage.

L-shaped kitchens: a popular set-up consisting of two adjoining runs of unit, this layout is great for creating a sociable space.

U-shaped kitchens: with kitchen worktops along three successive sides, this layout provides ample storage and worktop space for a practical and efficient space.

g shaped kitchen

G-shaped kitchens: this type of kitchen has four sides, creating an ideal spot for a peninsula. It’s a great option if a U-shaped kitchen wouldn’t provide enough storage and workspace.

KITCHEN DESIGN PRINCIPLES

There is no one size fits all solution, but there are some tried and tested principles that can might provide a good foundation for your design.

The working triangle: this is a long-used design method, sometimes used as a starting point for kitchen layouts. It is the distance between the most used points in the kitchen – hob, fridge and sink. The aim is to place these on the three points of a triangle, creating an efficient workflow.

This can be a helpful method to ensure the functionality of your space, however, it does not work with every layout. Galley kitchens, for example, do not work with the triangle concept due to the lack of space, and it is not always an efficient layout for open concept kitchens either.

Zoning: this approach works by having specific zones within the kitchen for different tasks and activities: a hot drinks zone, a food prep zone, a washing-up zone, and so on. Your washing up zone, for example, sees your dishwasher, sink and bin positioned together, near your crockery/utensil drawers to make tidying away more convenient. The zones you have should reflect the needs of your household and help you to easily navigate the kitchen.

The main purpose of these approaches is ensure that your kitchen appliances and equipment are carefully positioned to meet the needs of your space.

THE ART OF COMPROMISE

Finally, remember that with any interior renovation or remodelling, compromises are occasionally necessary. You may have your heart set on a particular feature with the ‘wow factor’, such as a large island or a walk-in pantry, but not have enough space for them. Trying to squeeze in too much will have a negative impact on the flow and functionality of your space, so you may need to consider alternatives, such as a peninsula rather than an island.

At Woollards of Midlenhall, we are committed to achieving your vision of a dream kitchen and will be on hand every step of the design journey. If you’re keen to include a feature that won’t work within your space, we’ll be on hand to offer solutions so that you can still achieve your kitchen goals.
